RMYC Start Sailing Course

Assumed Knowledge: Ideally, some experience as crew, but this is not essential.

Minimum Age: 18

This short course will put you at the helm of a keelboat and teach you the basics of sailing. It is ideal for those with experience as crew or with some experience on dinghies, but this is not essential.

You will be coached by RMYC members some of whom are also RYA Racing Coaches. The level of training can therefore be tailored to individual need.

Sail Training on an Etchells Push the Boat out Day

Course Content:

Parts of the sail and sail controls; wind awareness; preparing the boat for sailing; leaving and picking up moorings; sailing upwind; The “Five Essentials”; tacking; gybing; controlling speed; lying to; heaving to; anchoring; man overboard; basic Rules of the Road.

The format for the course will be a series of evening classes to cover the theory, followed by practical sessions at the helm under the guidance of the coaches. We would expect at least six outings under the supervision of a coach. The timing of these outings will be arranged to suit the tides, the weather and the availability of participants and coaches.

Course Fees:

Members:        £75 (This is to help cover the cost of running club training boats)

Non-members: £275, which includes temporary membership for the season and access to the club boats when the required level of competence is reached.

New members are, of course, always welcome.

Course Dates:    Evening Classes – 26 April, 3 May and 17 May;

                 The first three training days on the water will be 30 April, 7 May and 20 May. Further days to be arranged on demand.
