The Royal Mersey Yacht Club

The Royal Mersey Yacht Club was founded in 1844, with Queen Victoria as its first patron, making it one of the longest established Yacht Clubs in the UK. For over 175 years the Club has promoted yacht racing on the River Mersey and adjoining waters.

The Club focuses on one-design keelboat racing. There is an intensive programme of racing from April to September offering both weekday evening races and events at weekends.

The Club House is located at Rock Ferry on the Wirral, and is a few yards from the slipway used for access to the River.  A short distance from the Mersey Tunnel and with fast links to the M56 and M53 motorways, the Club is within easy access to members in Lancashire, Cheshire, Greater Manchester and beyond.

Deep water moorings are organised by the club for class boats.  A fleet of safety boats operates a boarding service from the jetty on all race days.  Winter storage is available for members’ boats in the Club boat-yard.  Everyone is welcome, from experienced sailors to interested novices, and we run a series of taster & training events to establish and develop new members within the club.

There is a very active social programme centred in the Club House.  From the regular suppers that are served after racing to the formal dinners and balls, the Club offers members ample opportunity for post-race relaxation and many occasions for inviting guests to social events.

The Club House is also available for private functions.

RMYC & The Menai Strait Regatta

The Menai Strait Regattas are raced over the fortnight in late July to early August. The sailing takes place on the Menai Strait, a narrow stretch of water separating Anglesey from mainland North Wales. The majority of the boats racing are classic boats such as the Fife OD, the Mersey Mylne OD, and the Conway OD. We also welcome Cruisers and Dinghies in handicap fleets. The event is largely based at Beaumaris towards the Northern end of the Strait but other venues along the Strait are included right up to Caernarfon towards the Southern end.

The regattas include the iconic races from Beaumaris to Caernarfon through the Swellies and round Puffin Island.

Regrettably, the Regattas in 2021 have had to be cancelled due to local Covid regulations.  However, the dates for the Menai Strait Regattas 2022 are confirmed as Monday 1st to Saturday 13th August.
